University Hospital for Infectious Diseases

Zagreb, Croatia

History

The University Hospital for Infectious Diseases was founded in the spring of 1893, under the name of City Hospital for Contagious Diseases. At that time, cholera spread around Europe and Middle East, and presented a great danger for Croatia because this territory has been a crossroad of many trade ways, just like today. Fortunately, cholera didn`t reach Croatia. Step by step, the Hospital became larger and larger admitting all patients with classical infectious diseases (diphtheria, scarlatina, typhus, etc.). During the First World War, Hospital had 800 beds, and served as ciivil as well as military hospital (typhus exanthematicus was spread among soldiers). From the very beginnings, some doctors and nurses were working full time. In 1914, Hospital had a primitive laboratory for basic analysis of blood and urine. Between 1920-30, the Hospital developed rapidly, thanks to two famous doctors, Steinhardt and Mihaljevic. The today`s hospital was named after the second one. These two doctors introduced all the modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for that time. Although the Hospital passed through many difficulties, it became the leading University Hospital for Infectious Diseases, not only in Croatia, but in this part of Europe too.

Medical activities

There are 11 hospital wards, according to the different medical subject (e.g. dept. for viral hepatitis, dept. for respiratory tract infections, dept. for urinary tract infections etc). There are 2 Intensive Care Units: - ICU for adults (CNS infections, life threatening infections with respiratory insufficiency etc.) - ICU for children (all life threatening infectious diseases at that age) There are 2 out-patient departments: -one for patients coming for the first time to be examined - the other for the follow-ups of the previously hospitalized or previously examined patients by general practitioners. The diagnostics is very important in our Hospital, and we have different laboratories, with the top quality equipment (laboratories for microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, cytology with flowcytometry, biochemistry, haematology, ECG, EEG, ultra sound with transcranial doppler and radiology). We perform all diagnostic procedures for infectious diseases except for viral culture, but we cooperate with other institutions for some other specialized diagnostic procedures.

As a leading institution for infectious diseases in Croatia, the Hospital also serves as a reference centre for: AIDS; infectious diseases; urinary tract infections; tropical medicine and travelers diseases; diagnostics and treatment of viral hepatitis; antibiotic resistance control.
